As your work round did not work on my machine, I had a look at the link and according to one poster the work round is trouble and should not be used.

I could not work out how to subistitute his proposal, because I do not know what file to alter.

I started off with Ubuntu 12.04 and then added in lubuntu. Unfortunately there is no app to turn off the login sound from within Lubuntu, or is there?

I have tried a few sources of advice but they have not worked. What is the way to turn off the login sound?

I have tried the suggestions in the link. I now have 2 shutdown button both of which do not work.

I am closing down with command line reboot, shutdown etc. I looked at the files to which you refer and do know how to open them let alone edit them. Is it possible to change the command in the close down button so that it runs " sudo shutdown -h now"

I have started an new thread on the outstanding matter.

When I run sudo shutdown -h now it shuts down properly. When I use the icons nothing happens even when I use the guest login. I did not create a new user because I used the guest as a test. Would you mind checking the script you suggested and seing if something closer to the command line to shutdown...
