You can go to Edit -> Preferences -> Display and tick the "Hide close buttons" option. It makes the tabs (slightly) smaller. You can close a tab by middle-clicking on a tab or by pressing the 'ctrl + shift + w' combination. You might also want to tick the "hide menu bar" option, ...

From what I can understand from the wiki link you gave, you need to copy the contents of /home/user/.config/lxde into the /home/user/.config/lxsession/LXDE/desktop.conf file and the contents of /usr/share/lxde/config into /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/desktop.conf file.
