If not, you will need to edit the file /etc/rc.conf as root. Add networkmanager to the list of daemons.

pacman is a command used in Archlinux. It does not work on Ubuntu. The Arch wiki has very good documentation for LXDE and PCManFM, but you will have to use the information in the context of Ubuntu/Debian. I suggest posting your questions on ubuntuforums.org

No, pulseaudio is not necessary. Follow the instructions in your distro for configuring alsa. For ubuntu, you can start here:

If you have network manager running and can get a wireless connect (usually more difficult) you should also be able to make a wired connection. You don't have to replace network-manager with wicd as both will accomplish the same thing. Just right-click on the applet in the tray (LXpanel) and choose ...

A good place to start is nm-applet and network-manager for the GUI.
