Looking for a Linux to run LXDE!

Post by bugbear »

My oldest function machine has some issues, at least it does in 2014.

It's a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo, with the "somewhat questionable" Intel 8xxx graphics,
and the "nearly-PAE capable" Celeron M.

Now that Ubuntu has 14.04 LTS, I was trying to find a non-PAE install
so I could use current(ish) software.

It looked as if Mint 17 might be it, but the installer hung.

I would welcome words of advice, either on persuading Mint 17
to place nice, or alternative Linux-es.

I am a fan of LXDE, even using it on my most recent laptop at work, which is more
than capable of running compositing window managers et al.

You should be able to load *buntu on a non-PAE processor.

Look here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/450400/i ... -processor
and here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Advance ... _Celeron_M

I recommend Sparky Linux LXDE or Base. You can easily install LXDE on the Base distro and have a little lighter distrubution. See http://lxlinux.com/introduction.html and http://lxlinux.com/favorites.html.

Debian provides a 486 kernel for older systems, which isn't a PAE kernel. That particular kernel and LXDE work perfectly on my ThinkPad T43 (manufactured 2005).
