Re: Shutdown button problem [SOLVED]

When I run
sudo shutdown -h now
it shuts down properly. When I use the icons nothing happens even when I use the guest login. I did not create a new user because I used the guest as a test.

Would you mind checking the script you suggested and seing if something closer to the command line to shutdown could not be incorporated into it?

For the last six months, using lxdm login manager and Open RC init, then lightdm and Open RC init and then lightdm and systemd init, on a Sabayon Linux OS, I have either had no shutdown button and restart button, or, after an lxde update they are there, but don't work. I have now switched to Xfce as a consequence. I am just perplexed that it seems so difficult for a desktop environment to have working shutdown and reboot buttons. How hard can it be?

I had this problem and I solved it as follows:
apt-get purge systemd
---------------------------------
then your system will revert to using consolekit which apparently the buttons need. There is still a bug open on this and it had me stumped for a while because the buttons worked on 3 of 4 boxes that I installed LXDE but not on the 4th box.
Here is the open bug:

As your work round did not work on my machine, I had a look at the link and according to one poster the work round is trouble and should not be used.

I could not work out how to subistitute his proposal, because I do not know what file to alter.

Very likely his patch could be applied to source from here: http://packages.debian.org/source/jessie/lxsession
I haven't tried it yet.
I'm also trying to figure out who maintains the lxsession package and if the maintainer is working on this problem.

That's for mageia -- i doubt if very many of us use that distro. http://www.mageia.org
The patch author there intends his patch for mageia users. I don't think he has made any effort to contact the LXDE community in general and he didn't exactly welcome my comment. I'm going to post some of this on one of the LXDE sourceforge mailing lists.

Some distros have a separate forum for the LXDE version. Others do not. Developers do not generally read or even visit forums frequently. Sourceforge is where to go to report bugs or suggest patches.

If you have one make it known here and perhaps several more folks will pile on. Remember the old squeeky wheel principle, it is the one that gets the oil (or in this case the attention).
