USB mount issues *solved*

I tried searching on these forums for an answer but none of the few posts that there were helped.
Anyways, to keep it simple - I plug in a USB flash drive and it will not mount. If I try to click on it in pcmanfm, it just says i'm not authorized. It USED to work just fine. I've had this issue for a month or two. I don't use this computer too often which is why it hasn't been that big of a deal but I'm going to need easy access to my flash drive for work.
When I installed usbmount, that would only work if I logged out and logged back in, but my usb drives were read-only which is still very unhelpful.
I'm currently running Debian squeeze, 32 bit. If it helps, I'm using very few gnome packages - i don't use gdm, i don't use gnome polkit, and i don't use any gnome disk utilities other than gparted and the gnome related dependencies of pcmanfm.
