Lubuntu/LXDE drops CD/DVD drive

Post by nomko »

Hi everybody,

Since a few days we notice that Lubuntu 12.04 drops the CD/DVD drive. When we put a disc in the drive, we cannot open the drive to remove the disc. Only after a reboot we are able to open/close the drive and after a while Lubuntu/LXDE drops the connection of the drive. When this happens, the command LSPCI/LSUSB shows no drive connected. What can cuase this and how to avoid this in the future?

Many thanks in advance!

I don't Lubuntu so this is the best I can do for you.

I am a more of a command kind of user than a gui user myself. 8-)
the command LSPCI/LSUSB shows no drive connected
I use (with dvd movie inserted in my dvdrom drive)

I'm quit familiar with the eject command but that doesn't work either. Lubuntu doesn't see the drive and therefore it cannot send commands to the drive.

Not workable either when Lubuntu drops the connection with the drive.

I'm thinking that it has more to do with the drive going broke rather than Lubuntu. But that's a wild guess...

I had some time to install another Linux distro and exactly the same problem appeared. The cd/dvd drive connected was dropped after a while. I guess it has to do with the drive and not the distro.

Out of curiousity, because it does sound like the cd drive is about to go belly up, if you have an external cd drive try to mount it and see if it works properly.

It's an internal drive..

No. Sorry. That's not what I meant. If you have an extra external cd/dvd drive laying around that hooks into a USB port you could try that. I have one that I use occasionally because one of my computers is a net book without an optical drive.
