Would it be possible to make the desktops behave as in XFCE, where the mouse pointer hits the edge of the screen and then wraps to the next desktop, for quick and easy workspace switching? The mousewheel switch is OK, but doesn't work with a fullscreen window.

it is possible.
you have to check out openbox documentation.
openbox is lxde's window manager, and it would be responsible for that functionality.
