Synaptic Question

Post by mick823 »

I have noticed over the last several versions of Lubuntu that one of the selections in the Synaptic "software sources" is grayed out. Open Synaptic > Settings > Repositories > Updates. Near the bottom "When there are other updates" is grayed out. Lubuntu 11.04, 11.10 and 12.04 all have the same issue. Any thoughts on why this might be happening? I don't recall seeing it on any other distro except Lubuntu. Picture attached.

Rex are you seeing any crashes in 12.10? I was having software crashes with ubuntu-tweak and the ejecter application I talked about in another post so I went back to my 12.04 version. My new netbook with the Intel N2600 chip is a no go because 12.10 won't even boot with the standard kernel. I did get it to work with the latest experimental 3.7 kernel but I wouldn't want to rely on that as my main OS. One wrong update and you can be back to a no boot situation.

no crashes so far, and I installed last October when it was released. I still have 12.04 on the other half but haven't used it much. I love this netbook, but am wary because of your posts.

Rex,

The old netbook with the Intel N270 chip runs the 12.10 version without a hitch. It is the new netbook with the Intel N2600 that has the issue. 12.04 runs on it fine because of the cedarview graphics drivers that are in the standard repository. Installing 12.10 from scratch results in a blank screen at login because it can't find a usable graphics driver and an in place upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 removes the cedarview graphic driver and results in a no boot situation too. Apparently Intel licensed the graphic drivers from a 3rd party source and that 3rd party refuses to release enough information for Linux developers to come up with a decent driver. I am confident it will all get resolved anyway in the near future. Maybe by version 13.04 it will be a non issue.

I was aware of that from your other posts, but when the time comes I will probably buy another netbook. I guess I just have to keep an eye on the progress here.

Rex, Not everthing is negative about the N2600 chipset versus the N270. The chip is faster. It runs cool and doesn't have a fan. The temp never gets above 55 C even under heavy load. I took out the original 320 GB HD and 1GB ram chip and replaced them with a 120GB SSD and a 4GB ram chip. I have seen reports that these mini's will not recognize more than 2GB of RAM. Not true. Like any other 32-bit it only sees 3GB but that is fine when the ram chip only cost me $20. Boot time from selection to Desktop is 12 seconds.

The only negative is the %#$@ video drivers.

Thanks for the information. By the way did you ever get the "when there are other updates" to work? What happens when you click on the greyed out arrow? I remember once I did that somewhere in lxde and It changed from greyed out to active. However, I do not remember where it was.

No. It is still grayed out. I tried clicking on it to see if it would change but no luck.

Hi there,

Is it the same issue on Ubuntu? I honestly never touched Ubuntu for a long time and I don't even have it on any of my machines over here (4 machines).

Edit:
Oh, after I posted, I checked my system (Lubuntu 12.04 64bit) and it is not grayed out:
