Debian Jessie and update notification

I've been looking at LXDE on the new Debian stable and have discovered that update-manager and the associated notifier have been dropped. Apparently other DEs (say GNOME and KDE) integrate a DE specific notifier which can work with multiple package managers (deb, rpm).
Have I overlooked an LXDE specific one?
FYI I tracked down a relatively new lightweight app named apt-notifier that seems to work on LXDE and XFCE4. It can be downloaded from the MX / MEPIS community repository at main.mepis-deb.org; in the same repo are dependencies yad and gtkdialog that must be installed first.
