Turned out the gnome-setting-daemon is responsible for it. If I disable it, the icons re-appear.
A better solution is to go into gnome-control-center -> Appearance -> Interface
and check the "Show icons in menu" option.

no menu icons in lxpanel
Hi, I just installed ubuntu 9.10, and I am using its lxpanel (version 0.5.3), together with lxmenu-data (version 0.1.1) and libmenu-cache0 (0.2.5). I am also using openbox as my wm. I am *not* using lxsession or any other component of lxde. They are not even installed. I am using gnome-setting-daemo...
