I am running lxde with openbox 3.50 on a headless installation of archlinuxarm on my raspberrypi. My screensize is small, 220x290 for viewing via VNC from a Zaurus PDA. I cannot speak for the OP, but I can say that I personally am running LXDE without a monitor on a headless server. No monitor on the host box does not mean I do not need a desktop manager if I want to access GUI applications over VNC. That is the reason I installed LXDE, so I could run GUIs remotely...
