from my own experience of installing new desktops i think its better to do a fresh install of the lxde edition of your distro or if it doesnt have one then install it right after you install your distro.

ray here, was first introduced to linux with mint 9 then was using ubuntu since 10.04. discovered lubuntu and been using it since 12.04, currently on 13.04. have it running on a desktop and a laptop and my other pc still has windows. theyre all in the 5-8 year old range, i also post occasionally on ...

for an old xp look use the 'mist' theme and use the system theme on the lx panel and install the faenza icon theme, if you want a more modern silver or blue xp theme use clearlooks instead and alter the panel and window colours depending on which scheme you want. a simple ''windows xp wallpaper'' go...

if theyre not already installed you should have the lxappearance and obconf packages, that will allow you to change themes, window borders colours, icons etc
