Can you verify that you have a polkitd process running?

When you say the screen 'locks' do you mean it enters a lock mode where you must enter a password to unlock it or do you mean that it 'freezes' and doesn't not react?

Is it possible to launch the 'keyboard layout handler' plugin from a terminal?

I'd like to launch the same window that appears when you right click on the language plugin and select the 'keyboard layout handler' option.
