Thanks for both replies. It seems that the ISO cd didn't have alsamixer included and thus not installed. I wonder why it was not included as a basic requirement. Using the commands you gave me and with a few reboots I have now got sound. Quite a surprise / shock / made me jump when it eventually cam...

I'm a newbie to linux.
I need to move away from Win98.
Have just installed Lubuntu.
Looks great.
I need to learn.
But I have no sound.
Thus I can't hear Youtube in Chrome.
Anyone there who can talk me through getting sound into my pc please - in very simple steps.
