I was able to install Fedora 15 with LXDE on a machine with 512mb of ram, but I wasn't able to boot the Gnome3 version. Of course I used the livecd. I would guess it doesn't matter which device you're using. I had an issue during my inital install using blank cd-rw, they were causing the issue, but ...
