Not really helping for that topic. But I installed (only out of curiositiy) wicd. It removed (without asking me) the gnome network manager or nmap. wicd was not working for me (maybe I am to silly). I had great difficutlties to get network manager and nm-applet running again.

Not a solution, but maybe a trick to a quicker access to programs or desktop icons. What about a panel plugin, which pops up with an (editable) listbox with a) either various programs, which the user can edit (not icons side by side, as it is in "Application Launch Bar) or b) a list of the desk...

no output in the console (not graphic, no debug outputmessages, i have to kill it with ctrl.-c, because it seems to hang).
