Re: How do you install LXDE instead of Windows XP

Oh great, I've read loads of articles about security tests on Windows, Macs and Linux machines and Linux always kicks ass, but I wasn't sure if I need to install extra software or not. I'm pretty careful what I download, I like synaptic as I can install almost all of the software I normally use in o...

Re: How do you install LXDE instead of Windows XP

Yeah, mine is a Latitude D600.

Should I run any security programs like AVG, or do I get good protection on the web without any extra software?

All of the programs I've installed seem to work great - impressed so far.

Re: How do you install LXDE instead of Windows XP

It's OK, don't worry about the partition problem, I think I'll just install again removing XP. I've got an old laptop too that kept crashing because of a memory problem. Since the Ubuntu CD comes with a memory test I was able to find out which RAM stick wasn't working (stopped it after finding 2,000...

Re: How do you install LXDE instead of Windows XP

Hi again, I didn't realize it was a bootable CD as it doesn't mention that at all on the installation page in the wiki: http://wiki.lxde.org/en/Installation Having never installed any linux systems before I didn't realise that was the way to go. Re: How do you install LXDE instead of Windows XP

After reading:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1247476

I disabled the other drive and tried again, now when I auto play the CD I only get one message saying:
"No CD detected, cannot run CD menu"

Very strange...

Re: How do you install LXDE instead of Windows XP

Hmmm, I downloaded Lubuntu and and the checksum was fine. I made the CD, but I get a strange error - I get: "pyrun.exe No Disk: There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive D:". Drive D: is my writer (with no disk in) and drive E: is the DVD drive which the Lubuntu disk i...

Re: How do you install LXDE instead of Windows XP

OK, I manage to remove loads of windows programs to free up 6GB of space and then I installed Ubuntu via the WUBI.exe file. Ubuntu was running really slowly - a lot slower than Windows XP was. I then eventually got LXDE installed, that runs a little faster but it is still very slow. Sometimes it can...

How do you install LXDE instead of Windows XP

As you might guess, I'm new to Linux. I've only used it a bit as a server and have never installed it myself. I have an old PC running windows XP which I'll to use as a Linux system now as I want to learn more about it. My PC only has 512mb ram and is running slowly, so I wanted to install a lightwe...
