Turned out to be fixed after launching a 'repair' session from Grub, choosing a root shell and removing the /media/cefn directory (and whatever broken cruft and permissions were there). After re-logging in as cefn the /media/cefn folder was re-created and no longer broken. The weird thing was being ...

Another test suggests there is one or other important package missing in the components I'm adding. If I install Ubuntu itself on 11.10 (the full install) then lubuntu-core, docky, gnome-do then things work well and lxpanel actually appears after a compiz --replace. Using Lubuntu because of the low spec of the machine I'm targeting.
