I can confirm this problem and it does _not_depend on the icon theme, because if the current theme does not provide the necessary icons, lxsession should fall back to the ones from /usr/share/lxsession/images. I'm trying to figure how to change colours, wide and so on for the panel plugins (I'm focused on cpu plugin by now).

Is there an easy way?

Oh, I'm running linux mint + lxde, and it works ok. And very fast, I must say.
