Running LXDE and Debian, my ThinkPad T43 turns the screen off automatically when I close the lid. When I reopen it after so many seconds, I am prompted for the login credentials.

Debian provides a 486 kernel for older systems, which isn't a PAE kernel. That particular kernel and LXDE work perfectly on my ThinkPad T43 (manufactured 2005).

Debian generally has a two-year release cycle, so any new versions of packages released since Wheezy was released, will not be provided by Debian until the next release (Debian 8), unless something is subsequently released that is security-related, in which case Debian should provide the new version...

Actually, there is, it's called Network Status Monitor, when it's added to the panel, the icon shows two monitors. If you double-click it, a window opens up displaying items including the activity (Received/Sent) in packets and Mb.

You may also want to check with Vodafone to see if tethering (what you want to do) is allowed by them.
