How to install LxQt on Ubuntu

Post by DrTobbe »

Hey guys,

the installation instructions on http://wiki.lxde.org/en/Build_LXDE-Qt_From_Source begin with "Get the source code from git". Nowadays, there exist also the downloads on lxqt.org, e.g. http://downloads.lxqt.org/lxqt/0.9.0/. Now I do not know, how to install LxQt with these downloads? Is it the same way as with the git repositories?

Thanks in advance and best regards

Welcome to the LXDE forum. I am not sure if LXQT is ready for "prime time" yet. That being said there are commands for installing it on Lubuntu 14.04 (the current and only Long Term Support release of Lubuntu). You did not mention which Operating System you are using.

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lubuntu-dev/lubuntu-daily
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gilir/q-project
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install lxqt-metapackage lxqt-panel openbox

Remember this is for Ubuntu. If you have a different system, we need to find something else.

Just out of interest, Dr. Tobbe, are you already familiar with LXqt, or are you just curious? If you're just curious, you could download and test-drive Siduction LXqt. It's already built and you can run it live without changing your current system. If so, here's their page to read about the most recent release: http://news.siduction.org/

It's Debian Sid, but don't let that scare you...it runs really well. I tried it, but I think LXqt needs a few more years to grow.

+1 Bob E. I thought I had read some where that they were looking at 2016 but I cannot find it now.

Thanks for your fast replies. I forgot to mention that I am running Ubuntu 14.10 and now, I am a glad new user of LXQt thanks to your help. I was interested to find out how to use the downloads from http://downloads.lxqt.org/lxqt/0.9.0/ because I would like to start contributing to LXDE/LXQt and write something about the installation of LXQt in the LXDE-wiki. It seems to me that LXQt will be our future but the wiki still seems very LXDE-centric.

It would seem that our future lies with LXQT but for now and probably for the next year or so we have LXDE. The WIKI is LXDE-centric because that is what we currently have. It will change eventually. Changes in LXDE are slow but I am very sure that your assistance will be appreciated by the development team.

I think I will start using LXQt now because it will enable me to better contribute to the project.

As this thread has only answered me how to install LXQt on Ubuntu, I have changed the title so that it does not mislead anyone.

Thanks for your help!
