Dock+Scale impossible? Compiz+Lubuntu Precise?

Post by cefn »

Using Lubuntu because of the low spec of the machine I'm targeting. Was just trying to get a dock and scale (Expose zoom) behaviour, to complement the LXDE panel launcher, and these components require a compositor, but launching compiz seems to kill the LXDE panel, though it comes back after rerunning the openbox-lubuntu window manager.

Settled on Docky as a graphical launcher, Gnome-Do as a keyboard launcher and the Compiz Scale Plugin for zoom behaviour but Compiz seems to be incompatible with Lubuntu Precise (12.04 LTS Beta 1). Hopefully this will be able to be fixed before full release of Lubuntu 12.04 and I'm keen to contribute.

I ran the following...
sudo apt-get install compiz-core compiz-plugins compiz-fusion-plugins-main compiz-fusion-plugins-extra gnome-themes-default compizconfig-settings-manager
...but the LXDE launcher panel becomes invisible after...
compiz --replace ccp
...although it still seems to be there, with a slight hint of opacity, you can't access it.

Incidentally found that LXDE on Lubuntu totally ignores the window manager configured through lxsession-edit>Advanced, with a fix as described at http://forum.lxde.org/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=31392
This is worth looking into in more detail, but I can't even get compiz to show the main LXDE components.

Anyone know what to try to run compiz AND see the LXDE panel (LXPanel?) as well?

Another test suggests there is one or other important package missing in the components I'm adding.

If I install Ubuntu itself on 11.10 (the full install) then lubuntu-core, docky, gnome-do then things work well and lxpanel actually appears after a compiz --replace.

Any ideas what packages compiz needs to be able to successfully paint the LXDE panel?

[Lxsession-edit still edits the wrong file and should instead be targeting files in /etc/xdg but I worked around this manually]
