Search Directories for Icons and Cursors

I'm wondering if LXAppearance has a setting to change/add the directory(ies) where it finds icons and cursors. I am on a FreeBSD system which places cursor themes from its official repository in to /usr/local/lib/X11/icons. LXAppearance, however, only finds themes that I have manually installed to /usr/local/share/icons.
So my questions are: Can I change the default search path for cursor themes? And, can I set up multiple directories to be searched?
If not, I will download the source code and see if I can recompile it to search in a different directory.
