Is it possible to upgrade seperate LXDE components?

Post by Lupitario »

For example, I am running Lubuntu 14.04 and let's say I want to compile and install the latest LXpanel without changing the other components. Is that possible to do without breaking the system? If I do the panel upgrade will it keep my current panel settings? Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the LXDE forum. I found a site that explains how to install the latest lxpanel version http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/vi ... panel.html. I am still researching the effects.

It looks that there are some additional dependencies but not really that many. As you know LXDE was created with semi-independent applications that use as few resources as possible. There is a LXDE core to which lxpanel belongs.

Hi, thank you for responding.
I compiled the panel according to that site and I installed some extra packages (libfm-gtk-dev, libwnck1.0-cil-dev) for it to install. The installation worked on Lubuntu 14.04 so i have the lxpanel 0.8.0.
It even saved my configuration. However one small issue: The default menu which I use to open applications (the bottom left one) has disappeared and the Shutdown key on the right as well. Instead there is this plus sign and it makes me choose an application. Did I miss something? Is the menu a different application that i should have installed? Also i can't find any similar plugins on panel preferences.
Thank you
Edit: Tried this fix but didn't work http://wiki.lxde.org/en/LXPanel#Fix_emp ... in_LXPanel (I replaced lxpanel -p LXDE with lxpanel -p Lubuntu on my system).

OK. Second problem first. Shutdown button is gone. See here

First problem. Does your Panel Applets tab of the Panel Preferences look similar to this?

(791.9 KiB) Not downloaded yet
Specifically, is there a menu entry?

No there isn't. And I also can't choose it from the Add menu. Also the wnckpager isn't there. But there is a cool weather applet and also the panel looks and feels way better than before. Did I miss something on the installation?

short answer: no.
long answer: you might get lucky, but you're more likely to run into problems with shared libraries (your new lxpanel will require a different version from what's avilable for your system) and general compatibility with the rest of your desktop environment.

it might, it might not. better to make a backup of the config files before upgrading.
