Double écran, mode étendu... "à moitié"

Postby shtefh » Wed Oct 17, 2012 8:13 pm

Hello everyone!

There is a nice tool called Arandr to set up dual screens. It will automatically save your settings in ~/.screenlayout, from which you can enter it in your start-up directory. I am writing in English because I know you know more English than I French :) .

Hi, thanks for your answer!

I've tried arandr, but it doesn't give me control to what is my problem... :/ Look the 2 screenshots of my desktop (in the bottom of my previous post), and tell me if you think I can solve that issue with arandr, and how to do it, because for now i don't see how to do it.

Is my english better than that of Google? Google translate:

"I tried arandr but it does not give me control over what I want to do. Look at the two screenshots of my office (at the bottom of my previous post), and tell me if you think I can solve this problem with arandr, and how, because at the moment I do not see how to do."

Your second picture appears to be an extended desktop. You have a screwy lower panel because apparently you do not have the bottom edges aligned. If you align the bottom edges, then you can adjust the lower panel geometry (lxpanel) to extend across whatever percentage of the total length that you want - from either the right side or left side or center of the extended desktop.

Your extended desktop will be 3200x1080, so that is what your picture needs to be to fit properly. There is a 56 pixel differences in the resolution heights, so you have to work out the geometry of the combined pictures or picture to make a perfect fit. I'll try to upload a shot of my extended desktop with different pictures on the 2 displays. The grey background on the left picture is background canvas added to the left picture to make up the difference in the display resolution heights. It is only put on the top and does not show on the display. Since the displays are aligned on the bottom, I get the pictures exactly as they should be on each display. You can read more about this in Sections 5 and 14 of http://lxlinux.com .

Your English is considerably better than Google translate.

By the way, Photofiltre is a French photoeditor that is really good for at least non-professionals. I've never got the Linux version to work, but the Wine version works perfectly.

Thanks!

I want to have the settings as in the second picture that you mentioned (that was the state of my config before it changed, the first screenshot (in my first post) is what i have now).

I don't understand why it has changed... So previously, the wallpaper was covering the two screen:

Good version (before):
Image

Now it looks like i have a duplication of the first screen on the second (see the desktop icons on the second), though this is not really a duplication because the windows are not duplicated... The second screen is half a clone and half an extended area of the first screen... :/

Look this screenshot, it's what i have now:

Bad version (now):
Image

I don't care if the panel doesn't cross the two screen (and i know how to manage it with size of the panel and alignment of the screens at the top (or in the bottom), i just want to have an extended desktop, just one desktop on two screen and no this curious half duplication of the first in the second.

Hope my english is good enough to clarify what i'm asking for...

Thanks for the link to your website, it's in my bookmarks! ;)

Photofiltre is a software I used when I was a windows users, and i liked it very much! :)

I understand what you want. I do not understand why Arandr does not automatically set it up, although I am only experienced with Debian based LXDE's. You might try Grandr. Also, you might try constructing a simple shell script, own it and make it executable - something like:

Code: Select all

#! /bin/sh
xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1280x1024 --pos 1920x56 --rotate normal --output DVI-I-0 --mode 1920x1080 pos 0x0 --rotate normal

This script assumes bottom alignment with the 1920x1080 on your left. After it is set-up, execute it by clicking it. If nothing happens, switch the order of the monitors in the script without changing the contents. Good luck :D .

I've heard about Grandr, but it's not available for Fedora 17...

About the script you propose, i'v tried it and the result is:

Code: Select all

$ ./test_display.sh
usage: xrandr [options]
  where options are:
  -display <display> or -d <display>
  -help
  -o

...[etc]....

If i simply run the command it outputs that:

Code: Select all

$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 3200 x 1080, maximum 8192 x 8192
DVI-I-0 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 477mm x 268mm
   1920x1080      60.0*+
   1680x1050      60.0
   1600x1200      60.0
   1440x900       59.9
   1280x1024      60.0
   1280x960       60.0
   1024x768       60.0
   800x600        60.3
   640x480        59.9
VGA-0 connected 1280x1024+1920+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 338mm x 270mm
   1280x1024      60.0*+   75.0
   1024x768       75.0     70.1     60.0
   800x600        75.0     72.2     60.3     56.2
   640x480        75.0     72.8     59.9

What happened on the screens when you clicked the script after making it executable? Nothing, i suppose :( ?
