I'm new to this subject. I was introduced to LXDE, but I have no idea how to use is. I've been told that is better then windows, is that correct?

Welcome to the LXDE forums. LXDE is Lightweight X-11 Desktop Environment. It is not an operating system but is a desktop environment that is used on many of the Linux operating systems. Being light weight and less resource intensive it is ideal for older computers or under powered computers but of course can be used on newer computers to increase speed. See http://lxde.org/ for an introduction

Here is a link to an "Introduction to Linux" that I wrote several years ago: http://lxlinux.com/introduction.html.
