missed wireless connections in NetworkManager

Post by Marcelo »

Hi, this is trivial, sorry... but maybe because of that I can't find a good answer in FAQs and forums.

I once manually deactivated wireless connections in NetworkManager and I can't activate them again, therefore nm does not re-scan connections. I tried purging and reinstalling as a workaround, but after rebooting it was just the same. I'm missing two things:
- a button called "refresh" or "activate wireless".
- somewhere to put "wlan0", as I experienced the same problem with wicd. However, while wicd NEVER scanned until I set "wlan0", nm used to do the job. I'm confused.

Thanks very much.
Regards.

When you say you deactivated your wireless connection do you mean that you disconnected it or you disabled it? If you merely disconnected you should be able to reconnect simply by choosing the network. If the file has become corrupted in some way, delete it and then add it again. It appears that you have done that. When you click on the wireless icon in the LXPanel, are "enable networking" and "enable wireless" both checked?
By the way what distro are you using and and what kind of hardware are you using?

I guess I desabled it. (Edit: When "wireless connections" were available in the panel, there was an option to disconnect similar to the one below Wired connections, and I just hit it. So now I think I disconnected it).
If the file has become corrupted in some way, delete it and then add it again.
Which file do you mean and where is it?
When you click on the wireless icon in the LXPanel, are "enable networking" and "enable wireless" both checked?
This is left and right clicks on the nm applet, respectively.

This is what the nm shows in the LXPanel (Spanish but simple guessing where "Red" means network -eg "Red cableada" = wired network-). There's nothing about wireless, as you see.

I have Debian Wheezy - LXDE with Fluxbox freshly installed on a Samsung Series5 ultrabook.

Thanks so much for the quick answer

After tryng some downloads suggested I couldn't get much help from it. Unfortunately, I can't confirm "There is usually enough information about your connections in Connection Informations to set-up a connection in Edit Connections" either, at least for this case.

Thanks so much anyway.

It looks like you may have turned off the wireless button on your machine.
You have to enable networking which you have obviously done (activar red) but you have not enabled wifi. That may be because you have turned off the Wifi button on your machine because there is no option to enable it on your example.

edit: seppalta did not mean to imply that you had to download all of those tools. They are just available.

I'm even more confused!!!
I purged NetworkManager and changed it for Wicd, which I know better, just for a trial. and it doesn't scan either.
I got into another installation in this machine (Debian-Fluxbox as this, but corrupted and now useless for regular things) and had the following answer to the command iwlist:

Code: Select all

So, this is hopefully telling me wifi is up because recognizes SAN-JUAN (this is my router) and Edda (my neighbor's :D ). Now, the only switch here is Fn+F12, and Linux seems to have desabled the Fn range of keys. I mean, neither I get wifi nor any other function under Fn (blue) keys. Or even worse, how could I accidentaly have desabled wifi by other means than Fn+F12?.

I'm following http://www.linux.com/learn/tutorials/37 ... hese-tools but the command ifconfig wlan0 up returns -for this installation- there's "no such a device".

Any idea on how to go on?

OK. First enter

Code: Select all

ifconfig
in the terminal.
That will tell you what your wireless adapter is called. It is probably wlan0. That is what mine is and I believe it is the default. Next enter

Code: Select all

sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
in the terminal and press enter. Debian may use su instead of sudo. Use what ever command that will give you root privileges. Also that is wlan0 (zero not capital O) Of course you will be asked for your root password. Enter it and press enter. That should get your connection going again.

Sorry, I already tried that when I wrote last time. This code above is the results for both commands you gave me. "No existe dispositivo" means "Not such a device". Trying them in another Debian installation that runs in another partition (however it doesn't work fine for other reasons) responded more positively giving at least a list of wifi networks.

Marcelo, it looks like your the computer is not recognizing your wifi card. Is there an indicator like a light (mine is blue) that tells you your wifi is turned on?
