mouting of filesystems

Post by suseuser04 »

Hello:

I am new to LXDE, so far I worked with kde versions.
I installed PC-BSD on my computer with LXDE. I also have openSUSE with several file systems on different partitons.
I noticed when I log in to LXDE many filesystems are being mounted even if they
are not specified in fstab. Filesystems on the hard drive partitions are mounted under
/media, which is also strange.
This automatic mounting caused filesystem corruption and degraded my raid array several times.
I find it unacceptable that the desktop manager mounts file systems without the user's specific
requirement. It also poses security problems, since filesystem belonging to other users in other
OS are mounted and are accessible. I want all those filesystems left untouched by LXDE.
Is there a way to disable this automounting feature? I want to be mounted only those filesystems
from the hard drive which I specify in fstab or mount manually.

Thanks,

Auto-start information can be found here.
http://lxlinux.com/#4
Are you talking about different partitions that your system is automatically mounting? Your files should not be available to a guest or a guest account. At least they are not in Lubuntu which of course also uses LXDE.

Rex Bouwense,

Thank you for your reply.

>Auto-start information can be found here.

I looked at that page. But I don't know what to search for that is autostarted.

>Are you talking about different partitions that your system is automatically mounting?

What do you mean on "system"? The OS or LXDE? The OS (PC-BSD) mounts only the partitions specified in fstab.
When I use LXDE desktop, other partitions are mounted too, for example linux partitions which are not part
of PC-BSD installation. These should be left alone, no under circumstances being touched by a desktop
manager.

LXDE is not an operating system only a desktop environment (specifically Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment). When you start your OS that is using lxde you should be able to see the other partitions on the hard drive but they are not (or should not be) automatically mounted. If you try to open one of them, you should be asked for your password. Is this not the case on your OS? Also, guests or other authorized uses should not have access to your files unless they have access to your password.

Ever try using the

Code: Select all

mount
In PC-BSD? LXDE like rex says has nothing to do with automount. PCManFM file manager IN PC BSD might though
as well as

Code: Select all

Hi rex. Having a good 4th of July here. Listening to rock and roll and barbecuing when I decided to drop in.
I don't LXDE much any more as I use mainly Icewm and Fluxbox mostly. I drop in though every so often
just to see how you guys are doing.

Happy Trails, Rok

Thank you for your answers, but it seems you don't understand my problem.

I am trying to make it clear.

I have both KDE4 and LXDE desktop managers on my system.
When I login to the system at a terminal window or I login to KDE4 only partitions specified in /etc/fstab are mounted.

For example:

df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
/dev/label/rootfs0 2G 418M 1.4G 23% /
devfs 1.0k 1.0k 0B 100% /dev
/dev/label/var0 991M 108M 803M 12% /var
/dev/label/usr0 140G 7G 122G 5% /usr
procfs 4.0k 4.0k 0B 100% /proc
linprocfs 4.0k 4.0k 0B 100% /compat/linux/proc

If I login to LXDE many other partitions are mounted as well in /media:

df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
/dev/label/rootfs0 2G 418M 1.4G 23% /
devfs 1.0k 1.0k 0B 100% /dev
/dev/label/var0 991M 113M 798M 12% /var
/dev/label/usr0 140G 7G 122G 5% /usr
procfs 4.0k 4.0k 0B 100% /proc
linprocfs 4.0k 4.0k 0B 100% /compat/linux/proc
/dev/ada0s8 9.9G 9.5G 3.4M 100% /media/_
/dev/ada0s7 34G 30G 2.3G 93% /media/ada0s7
/dev/fuse0 4.9G 607M 4.3G 12% /media/ada1s1
/dev/ada0s2 19G 18G 165M 99% /media/ada0s2
/dev/ada1s3 33G 29G 2.9G 91% /media/ada1s3
/dev/ada0s5 27G 21G 4.4G 83% /media/ada0s5
/dev/ada0s3 29G 27G 309M 99% /media/ada0s3
/dev/ada0s6 18G 17G 480M 97% /media/ada0s6

It is clear that not the operating system mounts those partitions, since only logging in to LXDE triggers these mountings. It is not necessary to start any application (eg file manager) in LXDE, still those partitions are mounted.

The filesystems on these partitions are accessible in /media.
Those partitions and filesystems do not belong to this OS, they belong to other OSs. They are not specified in /etc/fstab.
The should not be touched at all by this OS, namely LXDE.

Once more, those partitons are not mounted if I don't login to LXDE.
My question is if this behavior is the default behavior of LXDE. How can I prevent these unwanted mountings?
It seems that LXDE overrides the OS (fstab) settings when mounts partitions not specified in fstab. It should not happen
as it is a security risk and also a risk for filesystem corruption if the OS hangs.

What shows when you run

Code: Select all

 mount | column -t
in LXDE as root in terminal ?

rokytnji,

Thank you.

If I start up the OS and login to a terminal (ctrl+alt+F2) as root:

# mount | column -t
/dev/label/rootfs0 on / (ufs, local, noatime, journaled soft-updates)
devfs on /dev (devfs, local, multilabel)
/dev/label/var0 on /var (ufs, local, noatime, journaled soft-updates)
/dev/label/usr0 on /usr (ufs, local, noatime, journaled soft-updates)
procfs on /proc (procfs, local)
linprocfs on /compat/linux/proc (linprocfs, local)

If I login to LXDE, open a terminal, and change to root:

# mount | column -t
/dev/label/rootfs0 on / (ufs, local, noatime, journaled soft-updates)
devfs on /dev (devfs, local, multilabel)
/dev/label/var0 on /var (ufs, local, noatime, journaled soft-updates)
/dev/label/usr0 on /usr (ufs, local, noatime, journaled soft-updates)
procfs on /proc (procfs, local)
linprocfs on /compat/linux/proc (linprocfs, local)
/dev/ada1s3 on /media/ada1s3 (ext2fs, local, nosuid)
/dev/ada0s3 on /media/ada0s3 (ext2fs, local, nosuid)
/dev/fuse0 on /media/ada1s1 (fusefs, local, nosuid, synchronous)
/dev/ada0s2 on /media/ada0s2 (ext2fs, local, nosuid)
/dev/ada0s5 on /media/ada0s5 (ext2fs, local, nosuid)
/dev/ada0s6 on /media/ada0s6 (ext2fs, local, nosuid)
/dev/ada0s7 on /media/ada0s7 (ext2fs, local, nosuid)
/dev/ada0s8 on /media/_ (ext2fs, local, nosuid)

All those ext2fs (ext3 practically) should not be touched by thsi OS at all!

Next step?

Thanks,

Ok. I think the Hal support for pcmanfm file manager is what is auto-mounting your ext2 stuff but just a guess as I am just a Linux using Biker. Not a Linux IT guy.

You could try uninstalling hal in Suse linux and see if the problem ceases to exist. You can reinstall hal if you need it for lxde to work. Shutdown menu is one example where hal is tied in.

Code: Select all

sudo shutdown -h now
will get you out of lxde (turn off computer) if that happens or

Code: Select all

sudo shutdown -r now
for a reboot.

I had you run the

Code: Select all

mount | column -t
command because I was not sure if df was maybe being erroneous or mistaken. Kinda a double check.

DolphinFM in kde does not work like PCManFm in LXDE so maybe that is why the mounting is different. Pcmanfm and Lxde are siamesed together on a install so what you think is a lxde bug is what I think is a pcmanfm bug. Being a uneducated biker though I could be full of bull pucky though. I have to hand experiment usually to see if my ideas or theorys are right. What bugs me about LXDE is how pcmanfm is used as a controller/directly integrated for the desktop also. That is why it is siamesed into LXDE.

Just like caja file manager is integrated and helps in controlling Mate Desktop. I found this out while installing fluxbox in Mint 14 Mate distro.

Changing the desktop background while in fluxbox using mates wallpaper changer lost my fluxbox right click menu selection. Plus right click then gave me Mate options in Fluxbox. I used xkill on the desktop and everything went back to normal in Fluxbox. Just weird stuff on how file managers integrate with the desktop.
I installed feh,rox file manager, and scrot in my install so I could use those instead of caja file manager in my right click menu in fluxbox after I configured the menu by hand.

Re: mouting of filesystems

Post by suseuser04 »

Hello rokytnji:

Thank you again.

In the meantime I found how to solve this currently:

In PCManFM Edit/Preferences/Volume Manager there is a checkbox for "mount mountable" filesystems (or something like this).
I disabled it and after this the foreign filesystems were not mounted.
Still they can be mounted manually in PCManFm file manager.
I find this a serious security risk and therefore a bad design.
It is on purpose that mounting filesystems without the options "user" or "users" in fstab requires root access.
LXDE disregards this and overrides this rule.
I might send a note to developers regarding this behaviour.

Thanks again,
