Hello - I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to ask but after hours trying to connect my printer, I need some help!
I've just installed Lubuntu 16.10. It seems to be operating pretty well. Now I want to add my printer, a Canon PIXMA MG6660 and I just can't work out how to do this. This is frustrating because I have previously managed to run this printer from a computer running Ubuntu 14.04 and none of the advice I've found via Google has helped. I only need the printer to print. I don't need it to scan.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Lubuntu 16.10 - Adding printer
Welcome to the LXDE forum. Quick and easy question, do you have CUPS installed?
Rex
Re: Lubuntu 16.10 - Adding printer
Hi Rex
I don't think CUPS is installed. I checked through the installed software using 'Software'. The only thing I found that seemed related to printing was 'Printer' (v.1.5.7+20160812-Oubuntu1). I couldn't find software called CUPS or any mention of the Common Unix Printing System. Should I use another way to check for CUPS? If so, please tell me how?

Re: Lubuntu 16.10 - Adding printer
you need cups.
cups is available on *buntu, and on EVERY linux distro afaik.
if you can't install or find cups, you're in trouble.
maybe you have no repositories at all?
please open a terminal. enter the following commands:
and post the COMPLETE output here, in code tags.

looks ok to me.
i don't know what "inameiname" is, and there just seems to be too many sources, but that's just ubuntu i guess (which i loathe).
anyhow, cups is available for yakkety:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywo ... ection=all

Thanks drooly. I ran the sudo commands. Here's the output - I'm sorry I don't know how to use code tags:
simon@simon-X450EA:~$ sudo apt-get install cups

cups is already the newest version (2.2.0-2).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
So it seems cups is already installed.
I downloaded the IJ Printer Driver Ver. 5.00 for Linux (debian Packagearchive) from the Canon website - https://www.canon.co.nz/printers/pixma- ... on=drivers - and then tried to follow the instructions in the Canon manual 'IJ Printer Driver Ver. 5.00 for Linux (Operation guide)
For Linux Updated' for Ubuntu 14.04 but the command didn't work (the manual's at https://www.canon.co.nz/printers/pixma- ... on=manuals)
simon@simon-X450EA:~$ tar zxvf cnijfilter2-5.00-x-deb.tar.gz
tar (child): cnijfilter2-5.00-x-deb.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
There was also a package and instructions for ScanGear MP Ver. 3.00 for Linux (debian Packagearchive) For Linux Updated. Should I try this one or something else?

Re: Lubuntu 16.10 - Adding printer
Hi drooly and Rex
Eureka! Thanks for your help - I really appreciate the time you've given me. I kept trying things and have now got my printer working. I found that there was an installer as part of the driver package I downloaded from the Canon website and this worked fine. Now that I've done it, I wonder why it took me so long to figure this out!
Regards
Simon
