I was hoping someone could give me a hint as to why I can't get my notification banner to appear. After switching over to LXDE, a couple of years ago, for some reason I never realized that my pop-up banners were gone. I was using someone's MATE, the other day, and there were those forgotten notifications again. I kind of miss them on my LXDE now...
(OpenSuSE Leap - 42.2)
I already had these two installed:
libnotify4
libstartup-notification-1-0
Then I installed these:
notification-daemon
libnotify-tools
Then I uninstalled them (when they did nothing) and installed this:
notify-osd
Then I uninstalled it (when it did nothing) and installed"
dunst (+ 1 dependency)
Same results - no notification banners - no matter what...
A missing file or configuration, perhaps?
Thank you!

Well, since a community response didn’t appear to be forthcoming, after four days, I installed one more notification daemon - and this time... with success!
The mate-notification-deamon did it for me. Notably, it required no dependencies (even though I had no other MATE software installed); and furthermore, I didn't have to configure anything - I did not even have to add it to autostart- it just worked.
There are four themes; so run mate-notification-properties after you install it, to chose one.
