Lubuntu 18.04 LTS on a 2002 Dell laptop with 2GB RAM, 43GB harddrive and an external monitor.

Generally runs well except:
- occasional total freeze, planning a complete fault check of the RAM,
- occasional loss of all the desktop icons.

The desktop problem manifests as a freeze of a window and a fault message "Wait or End Process".
The End Process selection clears the displays leaving the (nice) Lubuntu background, but I can still get to a terminal.

What processes should I launch from the command line to recover the desktop ?
Is this problem likely to be bad RAM ?

please open a terminal window, enter 'top' or even better 'htop', understand what it shows.
then reproduce the problem - does something jump to 100% CPU?
what hardware is this? CPU, RAM and graphics?
