font corruption makes LXDE become unusable.

Post by luxy »

Hi,

I am using FreeCAD and after very little time it starts messing up other programs and desktop display widgets.

Initially fonts either start to appear broken but still legible, turn into something look like Hebrew or go blank altogether. I use VFE filemanager and eventually all I have left is the window structure and panels with the tree hierarchy, but with no content: no icons, no file name ; totally blank and unusable. Similarly I use LXterminal and this ends up functionally intact but with invisible fonts. It is usually sufficient to logout the desktop session and login again, though I may need a 3-finger salute to do this since I can not read the task bar items and the shutdown menu.

I'm not sure where start logging this bug. Only FreeCAD seems to provoke this, but whatever FC is doing it should not be able to mess up my desktop even if it wants to, so my impression is that it is a yet another nouveau driver bug. My on board graphics card is NVIDIA [GeForce 6150 LE], there are no proprietory drivers for this apparently, so I'm stuck with nouveau ( which generally works quite well for my undemanding usage ).

This is quite a problem since I need to logout after about 20m work sometimes and then restart all my work to get back to what I was doing.

No one else on FreeCAD forums seems to be having this so I'm guessing it is my odd mix of OS/desktop/hardware/videocard .

Other GUI programs are less affected, generally firefox t'bird leafpad etc, are still readable when LXterminal VFE and LXDE desktop widgets are unusable.

This takes me away from video drivers and maybe some common libraries with are leaking resources or getting corrupted.

Can anyone add any insight as to what is going on here?

TIA

what distro?
It sounds like a graphics issue; not sure why freecad triggers it.
please show us:

Yes, sorry, I forgot to mark Fedora 30 installed at Fedora 23 from LXDE "spin".

I have what I think is an unrelated issue which I've posted here without result. One of the entries in the sessions settings is blank. I have not been able to work out what this relates too but I noticed it at a time when I was trying to remove unnecessary services. I removed one too many and my desktop wallpaper and the drive icons do not show up. I need to run pcmanfm --desktop & manually on a new session.

" Unable to read the LXDE configuration file." Is this related?

I don't think the DBUS thing is an error on Fedora, I think it is a limitation from SELINUX.

FreeCAD is still beta level devel but I don't think it can be blamed for more than triggering a bug. Even maliceous code should not be able to do this.

I should probably grab Xorg.0.log next time it goes badly wrong.

BTW I have been seeing this on both the github master which I build locally and an ImageApp they supply, with all depenedent libs included.

Thanks for taking a look.

One problem at a time please. If you didn't get a reply earlier, there's probably a good reason for it.
And no, I don't think it's related (although I didn't fully understand).

You didn't post the full output for 'journalctl -b'.
But forget about it for now.

Try this:
  • Open freecad from a terminal
  • reproduce the problem
  • post whatever output you find inside the terminal - ALL of it
  • then also open another terminal and issue 'journalctl -b > some.file'
  • open some.file in a text editor, copy all of it, paste it here

I mentioned that because an unknown service is not being started with the session. I have no way of knowing what it is and apparently neither does anyone else. It seemed appropriate to mention it in case it is relevant here so no one comes back later and says "FFS, why didn't you tell that before? " .

I selected what looked like journalctl since last boot since it was pretty huge anyway. Sorry if that is not enough.

It happened again earlier and I looked at Xorg.0.log and saw nothing which looked relevant to problem. I'll dig journalctl next time it happens. It is a progressive problem. The display gets progressively worse until it is unusable and I need to log out. So I don't expect to see any event logged anywhere.

I always run form console and get a lot of this sort of output spamming the console. No idea if that is supposed to be a problem or some residual debug info they forgot to turn off.

Not sure what you didn't understand about my instructions from last post.
With the amount of information you posted now, all I can say is: Yeah, it seems to be nouveau related.
Try the (appropriate!) proprietary nvidia driver, maybe it helps.

My on board graphics card is NVIDIA [GeForce 6150 LE], there are no proprietory drivers for this apparently,
thanks.

Wrong.
Also have a good read of this.
Keyword "legacy driver". "Unsupported" does not mean it doesn't exist.
Take this as a hint to get active, not to start a discussion about old nvidia cards.

Thanks for those links, it appears that legacy 390.xx should work. However, about a year ago I tried the NVidia .run file and it just crapped out half way through with no coherent reason and left with a right mess to clean up by hand. In the ensuing discussion here, someone told me that my GPU was not supported anyway.

Having been particularly unimpressed with the mess the provided file left my system in , I just took there word for it and dropped the whole proprietory thing.

I may give it another look next time I can set a day aside to clean up the mess if it goes wrong again.

How did you come to that conclusion?
I came to a very different conclusion:
archwiki wrote:Determine the necessary driver version for your card by finding the code name (e.g. NV50, NVC0, etc.) on Nouveau wiki's code names page
so for GeForce 6150LE I come up with NV4C.
