Interesting, when I tried Wicd at my sister's and cousin's houses I could not connect to their WPA networks at all. I've switched to NetworkManager Applet. On arch the package is network-manager-applet. It seems to work great for me.

Not really helping for that topic. But I installed (only out of curiositiy) wicd. It removed (without asking me) the gnome network manager or nmap. wicd was not working for me (maybe I am to silly). I had great difficutlties to get network manager and nm-applet running again.

File a bug in Ubuntus Launchpad. Other distributions are packaging wicd in a way that it can coexist with NetworkManager.
