Why Can't I Log In To LXDE With Slim?

Seriously. I've tried everything and it's driving me insane.

I'm getting to the point where I'm thinking of reinstalling the entire system

I am just using exec startlxde in the ~/.xsession configuration file.
Slim ist starting the default entry and i am fine.

I'm sure that this is well-documented in the wiki, espicially for ubuntu and ArchLinux.
