Volume control does absolutely nothing

Volume control does absolutely nothing. I installed LXDE with all the dependencies & recommends on a Mepis (debian lenny) system. I enabled the volume control in the tray. I can move the slider all the way up & all the way down. I hear no difference. I can barely hear the sound on music or video.

Any suggestions?

The easiest way to debug any sound issue is with the command line utility alsamixer.
Check for the desired output being muted. On my sound card, the analog sound doesn't work unless I mute the SPDIF outputs.

and in case you are not sure....alsamixer is a part of the alsa-utils package.

Volume control does absolutely nothing for me. Volume control in the tray, slider moves without change and mute has no effect. I am able to adjust volume from within xmms, aqualung, vlc, etc. with no problem. However, I would prefer to use tray applet, especially when working in a desktop workspace without running audio application window.

Tried an enormous amount of fiddling with alsamixer without success or clue. Also able to make changes with Gnome's GUI.

LXDE on opensuse 11.1
VIA 8237 onboard sound.

i do have alsa-plugins-pulse and Pulseaudio installed. Could this be an issue with the Pulseaudio sound server? I have seen methods for safely removing Pulseaudio. However, I am reluctant to do so, not wanting to bork something that works almost 100%.

Not an emergency. But, any hints/help will be greatly appreciated. I'm a very happy LXDE user of about 3 months now.

I currently use pulse and have a lot of experience with alsa....so much so I helped with a wiki at sidux that may interest you. I no longer post to sidux but have a read ...look at the pics and then report what you see pls....or not see as the case may be.

I am not sure how you set up pulse but running alsamixer will confirm if its given over control to it or not.

2) No matter what pls run alsamixer with no extra parameters....press F5 and then take a snapshot

alsamixer -c 0.......shows what alsamixer looks like behind pulse using card with index 0
