Can you please tell me what are the processes which will be loaded in RAM once you turn your machine on?
Any good way to do so? I've got a lot of stuff running (Eclipse, Tomcat, Chromium and Skype at least) and probably many other things in the background, which I installed and which eats lots of resources (~780 MB RAM, half of which goes to Eclipse).
When I did fresh install there were only basic ubuntu stuff (not event software manager) and all the lx*** stuff as in lubuntu.
You have installed Ubuntu 11.04 mini or 10.04?
Ubuntu Minimal CD Natty Narwhal 11.04. Go here if you need others ;)

Done with remastersys. All went smooth and fast, even better than i expected. But I did backup function, cuz I needed home folder.
Took about 20 min for remastersys and about 10 to install (on VirtualBox machine with 512 MB RAM). Now I will be feeling safe , being able to restore fully working system in 10 min :D
Will test Wine and VirtualBox (for Windows tasks) and i guess i'll remove windows after that 8-)

LXTask is the default task manager for Lubuntu 11.04.

There are many of course.
"top" command is another way to do that in CLI and there is another app for CLI which is even better than "top" but I forgot the name.

Actually I did not mean the other processes you run, I was talking about the default that should be loaded in RAM upon start up.
I'm on Lubuntu 11.04 now with Firefox 6.0.1 and 4 taps + LXTask and it says: 250MB of RAM. But that with Firefox opened.

I remember when I installed Linux Mint 9 LXDE on my broken ancient laptop (HP P2 366MHz - 64MB RAM), it was using 40-45MB of RAM without anything opened or installed except the task manager.

I see, so you chose the latest not the LTS. I'll try to give it a go too :)

That's good to know, WELL DONE :D

Luckily, I keep XP just for testing stuff but other than that, I feel bad every time I use Windows :P

I'm running lxde on an Arch x64 system and it screams, much faster then lubuntu. Arch uses the excellent "pacman" package manager which is fast and powerful, not to mention you have access to the AUR which has all sorts of goodies available.

I have read about Arch months ago and so far, all what I read about it was good and interesting. However, I didn't have the chance to try it out yet.
I like their philosophy and sooner or later, I think I'll use it but not now :)

Lubuntu and LXDE are young projects and need all the support so I'm one of those who will do his best to support both projects.

I like your attitude. For some reason xubuntu runs better for me than lubuntu, but Arch with lxde seems the best of all. I've installed gdesklets and have a spiffy weather gizmo on my desktop if that's something you can use on lubuntu. I know lxde does not have a native weather app or panel plugin. Best of luck!

Thank you, I appreciate that :)

Hmmm, I'm not sure which one must be faster but for me, I don't like XFCE and never used it for 24hours :) I just install it and have a look for few mins then log out.
LXDE and GNOME are my favorite and now, GNOME has changed a lot (version 3) and I just don't like it because it's similar to Unity which is similar to Windows 7 and the last will give me heart attack. :D

Lubuntu 11.04 is great and I hope 11.10 will be even much better.

I never try to install anything extra except the applications/programs I need.
Firefox, and stuff like that when it comes to LXDE.

Funny thing is, I love Linux SO MUCH but until now, I keep testing and do many experiments. I'm looking for a used laptop and a new one so that I can keep one for testing and the other for daily use but I'm jobless at the moment and I'm trying to use this PC for everything so it's a bit hard but I'm enjoying it :)

I have three hard drives, one I keep Arch with KDE on, the second Windows 7  and the third for experiments. The third has at the moment Arch with lxde, openSUSE, Mandriva, Xubuntu, Mageia, and Windows XP x64.

I have two PCs and each has two HDD. I'm writing this from Ubuntu 11.04 on 40GB HDD with many other distros (Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Mint 11, Mint LXDE 11 and Fedora 15 and ... XP for experiments only (nothing installed in it).
The other HDD is disconnected.

I think I have more than 50 distributions and I guess I have tried them all. I usually just have a quick look and don't go that deep inside because there are more than 300 active distros and one needs lots of time to try them all.
Never been fan of RPM Distros. OpenSUSE is nice but I think it needs more care.

Have you tried SliTaz? 30MB OS and super fast but I don't think your Wireless Card will work out of the box.

I tried to install Lubuntu 11.10 today but had many errors. I don't usually do that but thought to give it a try. I always more into stable versions. Still not ready for Beta Releases yet.
