Just to let you know I have tried install the latest version of pcman 0.9 on an uptodate copy of lxde as per your invite above but
still get the same errors on install as I posted above a few weeks ago. I never got a reply but know you are very busy. Not sure where else to post it as it is not really a bug.
Here is the install command I used (as per the README):

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.
Alternatively, you may set the environment variables XLIB_CFLAGS
and XLIB_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
