I am getting confused about the cross references between LXDE and LUBUNTU.
Could you spell out for a beginner what their differences are, what each of them do, and how they are related?
I know Lubuntu is an OS -- where does LXDE fit into the OS? Is LXDE an OS of its own? Why is a Lubuntu Forum named LXDE Forum?
What is the difference between LXDE & Lubuntu?

LXDE is: http://wiki.lxde.org/en/Main_Page
Lubuntu is: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu
You can read only the first paragraph
A side from the above two links, LXDE is a Desktop Environment which gives the L to Ubuntu and make out of this another system called Lubuntu. Without LXDE, there would be NO Lubuntu at all. I'm not going to copy-paste from the above two links
This is NOT a Lubuntu Forum. If you have a look at the very top of the page where there is a logo for LXDE, next to that there is Home, Download, Screenshot, etc. So, to reach here, from the home page of LXDE, you need to click on Forum to reach here. This topic/thread does exist on a sub-forum for Lubuntu.
You have asked for a beginner answer so I had to go easy with short answers. I can write longer but that will create more confusion.
Much easier?
Ubuntu + LXDE = Lubuntu
Ubuntu has 8 different variants. The main are: Kubuntu, Xubuntu and Lubuntu.
Kubuntu is using KDE
Xubuntu is using XFCE
Lubuntu is using LXDE
Each one of these is a DE.

LXDE is not Ubuntu specific. It can even be ran in Puppy Linux

Slackware Linux

If it has a Linux kernel,xorg/X11,vesa video driver l and some build tools like
Then LXDE can be installed and ran on most anything (I read a post where a member here runs LXDE on his phone)
Any Linux major release can run LXDE as a alternative Desktop Session to Default Desktop Enviorment or Window Manager
session.

Then there is what I run in my signature. There are six editions of Salix; the Xfce, MATE, LXDE, Fluxbox, KDE and Ratpoison editions, each edition featuring the respective desktop environment.

Re: What is the difference between LXDE & Lubuntu?
Thanks guys.
Let me summarize, and please correct me if I'm wrong.
LXDE is what is known as a "desktop environment". This desktop environment can be installed on various Linux programs, and even on a phone.
Lubuntu is a Ubuntu based distro, that uses LXDE out of the box, automatically when installing Lubuntu. Lubuntu users can change LXDE for other "desktop environments", for example, the newly worked third party upgrade, LXLE.
Is Conky also a "desktop environment" or just something that is applied to a "desktop environment"?
Is a "desktop environment", then, the same as "graphic user interface" (GUI) ?

No=it's more complicated than a GUI.Is a "desktop environment", then, the same as "graphic user interface" (GUI) ?
Yes=in that it is a Window with mouse controls.
Conky is a executable script that monitors what ever you tell it to and runs on top of or in conjunction with a Window ManagerIs Conky also a "desktop environment" or just something that is applied to a "desktop environment"?
or Desktop Environment.
As far as LXLE goes. It is just a fatter Lubuntu in my opinion based on Ubuntu 12.04LTS and falls short in some respects but has some good points also in it's favor. I have ran it live but decided to wait on Lubuntu 13LTS that amjjawad posted about instead since I am a patient kind of ignorant outlaw linux using biker.
But that is my own personal outlook and one should make up their own mind on things like these. I don't like sweet potatoes while most every one else does.
