Hello again, list, moderators! For the record I'm x86-64 OpenSuse 12.3 kernel 3.7.10. Lxde version I still don't know how to get.
I want to invoke CD/DVD Creator myself rather than have to "trick it" to open with a blank CD. It's a great burner but it's a plain-jane application without a stitch of traceability! Even looking at application running with the task manger show me anything. I can't find this app in any menu.
It seems it should be easy to decipher what is running and where it's at! Please help me track this burner down!
This is the only burner that will burn mp3 for me. Brasero needs something neither it nor me can find! xfburn conveniently converts mp3 to wav on the fly and burns the wave file. My player only plays mp3 files.
I shudder to think I may have to go back to k3B! Heboland.
Executable Name for CD/DVD Creator?
Re: Executable Name for CD/DVD Creator?
it seems to me you answered that question already?
"xfburn"
i don't know about SUSE, but here on lubuntu 13.04 it is xfburn.
but i don't think xfburn can burn dvd's, only cd's.
if that doesn't answer your question, the answer most probably lies with suse, not lxde.
xfburn isn't lxde either, btw.

Re: Executable Name for CD/DVD Creator?
After some research, I discovered that your CD/DVD should be listed under Menu->Accessories. I also discovered that XFBurn does burn MP3 files which should be playable on your CD Player. While K3B is a very good application, it does carry with it a bunch of other stuff which sort of bloats your system.
Can I make a suggestion that you check the download of your "MP3 files" that you are trying to burn. There is a posting on one of the forums where that was the problem. The OP tried perhaps a half dozen burners before he discovered the problem was not software or hardware, but the music itself.

Re: Executable Name for CD/DVD Creator?
Thanks drooly, Rex!
drooly, with suse I had CD/DVD Creator working before I installed xfburn. Now xfburn is in my Menu > Sounds & Video. Since suse installs Brasero, I was surprised Brasero didn't open with CD/DVD Creator. My xfburn will take mp3 files without complaint, but it converts them to wav on the fly and writes the wav instead.
If I could tap into the control files for automounting the media in a drive, it's choices would be visible there, but I don't know where that would be.
Rex, I have 9 entries in Menu > Accessories. The have tool tips, so I know none of the choices are that creator. I see Accessories shows Properties, so new entries can be added there. Also Accessories > Accessory shows Properties for Accessory. If you do have CD/DVD in your Accessories it's Properties should show the executable.
My internet BW here is very small for any serious downloading, tho mp3s are pretty small. The mp3s I'm trying to burn came from Audacity transcribed from cassette tape. CD/DVD Creator burns mp3s for me nicely, but only into a virgin media. If I want to add files to a partially burned media, I can't invoke CD/DVD Creator!
For me the invocation of CD/DVD Creator happens behind closed doors! That still better than not having it at all! Heboland.

Re: Executable Name for CD/DVD Creator?
so you're not actually using lxde?heboland wrote:Lxde version I still don't know how to get.
it is confusing and counterproductive to ask for help on this forum, with things that have nothing to do with it.
but, fyi, you can get it here: http://en.opensuse.org/LXDE
about your problem:
- open your software installation tool
- search for cd burning software
- look for "details of this package" or "installed files" or sth like that.
- there you should find the names of the executables.
- depending on what menu you are using, there's ways of adding the missing application.
i can't be more specific because i know nothing about your DE (desktop environment).
nor can anybody else on this forum, unless they're by chance using the exact same flavor of opensuse.
you would be much better off creating an account on the appropriate forum and asking there.
Re: Executable Name for CD/DVD Creator?
Thank you drooly for your reply and comments.
I wan't aware of the link you posted. It does't look to me like a forum, but the subject of this thread seems to be suse related.
Regarding the lxde version I was hoping someone who knows how to find the lxde version could share that. From Help > About I can see pcmanfm is version 1.1.0, but I see things internally like openbox 3 and 3.5.
Oh yes I am using lxde! I've used it for several years now and I like it very much. I joined this forum to find help in changing some simple things.
The difficulty with the topic of this thread is to find something with an unknown name. I've already tried searching my installed files. Google hasn't help. Also I've used the lxde task manager, trying to detect a new process started when CD/DVD creator is invoked.
It's easy for someone that has CD/DVD creator in an lxde menu to look at it's properties. That shows the command line. For some distros that will be xfburn.
May I ask you if you have a CD/DVD creator in one of your menus? Rex suggested it should be in accessories. Right click on that entry and see what the properties show.
Somewhere lxde has to have configuration files that control the menus and also the popups that are triggered by mounting empty removable media. In my case only the "automount" popup will have the CD/DVD creator ID.
Like I wrote before, this is a simple problem that I can live with, but for me it raises the question of how lxde works. Since I like this desktop I think it's worth the investment to learn more about it. Heboland.

Re: Executable Name for CD/DVD Creator?
1. I'm not sure if there is a "version" of LXDE. Each component; PCMan, LXPanel, Open Box, etc, is designed to run independently. For instance I am using Lubuntu 12.10 now. It has PCManFM 1.0.1, LXPanel 0.5.11, LXTerminal 0.1.11, etc. They all work independently and do not depend upon the others to do their job.
2. If there is a menu item CD/DVD creator, it will (or should) be a shortcut to the CD/DVD creator that you have installed (Xfburn, Braserio, etc). If you have more than one installed it will point to (again it should point to) the one that you have set as default. You will also have an entry in the menu under Sound and Video for the same creator but probably under its proper name i.e. Xfburn.

Re: Executable Name for CD/DVD Creator?
Thanks for the reply Rex!
I noticed that none of the posters here give an lxde version like with say kde. All of the kde apps have the same kde version. Now that you answered regarding lxde version I know there really isn't an lxde version.
In my case I don't have CD/DVD Creator in any of my menus, so I can't get the properties myself. CD/DVD Creator just "shows up" when I plug in a blank optical disk. Like I wrote before CD/DVD Creator itself is pretty much incognito.
I did take drooly's advice to join the opensuse lxde list. So far it seems pretty informal and unstructured, but maybe it will pay off.
It's quite possible I can figure out my question by myself, but why reinvent the wheel?. My question is more a matter of customization rather than functionality, so it's not a show stopper.
I'm grateful for the help I've got from this site so far and I would like to remain a subscriber here too. If I do get this figured out, I'll post back to this thread with the results. Heboland.

Re: Executable Name for CD/DVD Creator?
i misunderstood your first post, sorry for that.
i'm still not quite sure what system you are using and to what extent you tweaked it.
anyhow, it seems to be open suse and i think you should join the general opensuse forum, not only the lxde mailing list.
of course you should also continue to post here!
i'm unsure of what you're actually looking for; i told you how to find the name of an executable, but you found it out in a different way.
anyhow now it seems you're actually looking for sth else? but you said yourself it's probably not so important.
please try to be more clear next time; i like helping people and having a good conversation in the process, but this is confusing.
fwiw, i'm usually using archlinux with some lxde components, namely lxpanel, lxmenu, lxappearance, openbox. right-clicking the menu did not give any "properties". so i booted into my lubuntu install, and there it is as you said. i'm saying this to show you how different things are on different distros, and why you should join your distro's forum.
on most lxde desktops pcmanfm is running as a daemon to manage the desktop and also performs "volume management"; that's what makes the pop-up window appear asking you what you want to do when inserting a blank cd.
there's desktop files in /usr/share/applications with a "mimetype" inside, telling the system what kind of files that app wants/needs/uses.
i appreciate your curiosity!
if you ask your question in a more general way, with the terms i gave you now, you can start searching the interwebz for answers. because the answers are out there already, but because of the diversity of the linux world it's often not possible to give a fits-all solution.
regards, d.

Re: Executable Name for CD/DVD Creator?
Thanks for your reply, drooly!
lxde is kind of a no-mans-land for support. I do belong to the opensuse forum and they are very good with opensuse help.
I haven't posted this question there, but on at least one lxde post there, the opensuse forum referred me here.
My lxde desktop is "stock" as it came from opensuse 12.3-64, but that doesn't define it very well. As Rex wrote lxde is a collection of apps each at their own rev level.
It's good to know that pcmanfm runs as a daemon, so it would somewhere contain the details for the blank media popup.
I looked at the desktop files. They are short, simple text files that mostly describe the icon for the app and the command line invocation. in the case of pcmanfm the execute line follows. The MimeType doesn't mean anything to me yet.
Thanks for checking your menu properties for me!
Nothing has come from the suse-lxde list you suggested, but I joined it and attempted to post this same question there.
As a last resort I can install k3b, but I can live with what I have.
Since I'll probably stick with lxde, this issue gives me a chance to learn more about it. Heboland.
