lxde/openbox/twm?

i'm rather fond of the twm model where i place window icons wherever i wish on the desktop. might i fairly easily get the best both both lxde and twm, perhaps twm might simply run together with openbox, or perhaps there are hidden openbox config options that might bring me joy?

I doubt you'll be able to run openbox and twm together - they're both window managers. Icon placement on the desktop is often (typically?) controlled by the filemanager. As of version 0.9.8 pcmanfm does not permit user-specified placement of icons on the desktop. I know that capability has been requested, and I believe it's being worked on.
