Say Hi – Cut Price Raspberry Pie

Post by Ziggi »

While millions around the World wait for production release of the latest Raspberry P500 computer in a keyboard…

Save money on Raspberry Pi-5 with Dark Silicone removed :geek:
Save $30, Save power, Save the Planet
All Good? For me – Yes :) For you – Possibly…
Unless you are psyched into believing you need 8GiB RAM and beyond?
https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/2gb-ra ... now-at-50/

Reportedly this new Raspberry Pi5 is almost identical to their latest 4 & 8Gib RAM Pi 5 boards but this cost cutter has just 2GiB RAM
OMG What can you run with that? - I hear you ask.
Well - Raspberry Pi OS – now based on Debian "Bookworm" is the start point.
However….
Uninstall Raspberry Pi OS tools:
sudo apt autoremove --purge pi-package -y
sudo apt autoremove --purge pi-package-data -y
sudo apt autoremove --purge pi-package-session -y
This should speed things up a little and get back to our favourite efficient LXDE :D

Hey Guys – Don’t stop there…
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. 8-)
"It seems that perfection is reached not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away" – My principle – Need I say more?
Let’s get to it – rather than removing the notorious bloated ‘systemd’
https://www.without-systemd.org/wiki/in ... Main_Page/
I suggest installing a systemd free distro such as antiX
512MB RAM is the recommended minimum for antiX. 1GB RAM and above is preferred especially for antiX-full.
See my other posts for removing their WMs & FMs then install LXDE.
Even simpler; just install Loc-OS LXDE version which is systemd free and fast.

AntiX-Full-LXDE 150MiB RAM at idle - Loc-OS 200MiB at Idle (my LXDE setups)
I had used antiX22 Full and Trisquel Mate on a lovely old 2GB Toshiba Satellite laptop without any issues.

Okay so you don’t like Raspberry Pi how about Homity Pie; made with Le Potato? Or Tinker with the recipe on an Asus

BTW - With my old 2008 3GiB laptop I can edit a Libre-Writer file and playing three movies on the web at the same time – whilst simultaneously recording a screencast video of this multitasking. :D Then editing video and uploading to imgur dot com.
Many will confirm that it will be your old CPU that is struggling with such multitasking and not the limited RAM which may be using around 35 – 50% being nowhere near Swap Zone. At the same time you may find your old CPU being hard pressed; peaking at 90%

I would expect the Pi-5 2GiB version to perform much better having:
BCM2712D0 2.4GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 CPU, D0 "cost-optimized" stepping - 2GB LPDDR4X-4267 SDRAM
VideoCore VII GPU, supporting OpenGL ES 3.1, Vulkan 1.2
Dual 4Kp60 HDMI display output

Purchasing second-hand or refurbished Raspberry Pis can be another way to get a Raspberry Pi at a lower price. Many online marketplaces or specialized electronics stores offer used boards at discounted rates. Hole IO
