Hello eveyone! I recently installed linux to some hardware i have here, and i thought of using LXDE for the first time as well, but as i went researching on how to customize it, doubts began forming on my head:
Is it deprecated? I saw lots of posts saying it was deprecated in favor of LXQt
How can i make it work on a HiDPI screen? It doesnt have scaling options im afraid (screen resolution is very high on this machine for a 16" display)
Lastly, stupid question, but do we have a wayland fork? I know LXDE abbreviates to Lightweight X11 DE, but maybe im not out of luck.
Thanks in advance!

Re: LXDE Questions
Hello! I am a very new person to the community, so I hope others correct me where I am wrong...
I have recently been able to resurrect an older chromebook with LDXE and I am loving it. The power and resource consumption is extreemely minimal. I have little use for customization, I just want it to look like it looks and perform well on old hardware.
So far I am a huge fan of LXDE and am hoping to find a way to get more involved and help.

I am unsure of where the limits are on customization beyond defaults. As to the depreciation... technically yes, the original developer and team have shifted their efforts over to LXQt, however the community has kept LXDE alive. The GitHub has seen attention, however the Wiki (linked from the main website) has seen better days.damongraham wrote: ↑Fri Nov 22, 2024 8:11 am Is it deprecated? Sorry I can't speak to the HiDPI issue...damongraham wrote: ↑Fri Nov 22, 2024 8:11 am How can i make it work on a HiDPI screen? It doesnt have scaling options im afraid (screen resolution is very high on this machine for a 16" display)
If you are looking for Wayland support, you'll need to look to LXQt. They seem to have just announced lxqt-wayland-session 0.1.0 this month!damongraham wrote: ↑Fri Nov 22, 2024 8:11 am Lastly, stupid question, but do we have a wayland fork? Re: LXDE Questions
Hi Graham,
This should dispel all those myths about LXDE and 16 inch high res displays etc. etc. the list goes on and on….
Here is LXDE operating faultlessly on my 2023 16 inch HP EliteBook 680 G9 which is Triple Booting at the moment with Loc-OS LXDE as default, then Win11 or Tails.
For now sample screenshots uploaded: https://imgur.com/a/m30bDKh
As you can see from the screenshots I have customised LXDE-Openbox-PCManFM to my liking – this was so easy. You can see how Loc-OS LXDE looks straight out of the box on a fresh install.
Even easier still Loc-OS comes with five drastically different themes which should please someone? Two clicks – Job Done
Many more LXDE themes to download for any distro if you are lazy?
https://www.maketecheasier.com/9-great-lxde-themes/
https://www.addictivetips.com/ubuntu-li ... de-themes/
https://www.techjunkie.com/theme-lxde-linux/
My own view on LXDE is that if it ain’t broke then it does not need fixing – simple.
Lxqt has problems of its own and needs fixing! It is less efficient so why bother?
BTW did you not search this forum and find for example…
viewtopic.php?t=42379
and the false bug…. viewtopic.php?p=59347#p59347
As you can now see yet another myth about LXDE is just for old computers with low resources is absolute rubbish as is that myth about scaling…
https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... le-in-lxde
BTW – I have not changed scaling on my 16” Laptop yet – what laptop are you using?
Hope you will now get on and experiment - Enjoy
