@amjjwad - The OP did say he tried Lubuntu. He, or the woman he is helping, likes how fast it is, but does not like the way it looks.
My bad, sorry, I need to stop opening 20 tabs (10 at each browser - Firefox and Chromium) and re-read carefully :)
Thanks!
@Mitia - If you want a light, fast, and "sexy" looking distro for her old computer, I would recommend Bodhi Linux. It only requires 128mb of RAM, is really fast, and has a lot of eye-candy she will like.
Why to recommend another Distribution if you can do a lot with Lubuntu? I can't deny that some applications don't actually work out of the box and you need some few steps to get it to work but eventually, it will work.
Above all ... the more applications you add, the slower your machine will be specially if you are running on lower RAM.

I have mentioned that in many posts. I have done some tests where SWAP is OFF and RAM was 242MB. You can easily produce:
1- Frozen PC
2- Very Slow PC

Also, you'll understand many things that we usually either skip or don't pay much attention to it.

I think I should start writing about my latest test and publish that on a blog. Just to make things more interesting ... Ubuntu 10.04 gave me a solid performance on 242MB RAM and SWAP OFF BETTER if NOT MUCH BETTER than Xubuntu did. I didn't realize that my PC will be frozen with Xubuntu 11.04 while it was so slow with Ubuntu 10.04!!! that was a big surprised and didn't know that until I've seen it myself. Who said Xubuntu is a lightweight?

On another note, I'm planning to breath Lubuntu 11.10 (or 11.04) on my ancient Laptop:

However, I have to write two things: A full beginner guide for Lubuntu that will be MORE than enough to any new comer to start his/her journey with Lubuntu without the need to be confused or ask a lot. It's a big project actually and I'm trying to start that soon. Also, write my last test result on my blog.
