I'm not sure that what I'm posting is relevant or not, but you could try this:
Just after "
CD/DVD Creator just "shows up" when I plug in a blank optical disk", open a terminal and run
Code: Select all
COLUMNS=150 ps -ef > ~/Desktop/out.txt
Then, examine the last few lines of `out.txt` to maybe get clues about what happened when you plugged in the optical disk.
(I also don't know if you'll need to modify the code for your OS. The code works on Lubuntu 13.04.)
Edit: I notice that you already did this: "Also I've used the lxde task manager, trying to detect a new process started when CD/DVD creator is invoked." Maybe the
ps output will be ordered in a way that may help ???
And I too don't know whether LXDE comes with a version number other than those of the components. Maybe it's a
zen thing?

Okay! IberĂȘ Fernandes from the Lubuntu Support Team pointed me to the LXDE wiki. The information is right there:
Latest version 0.3.2.1
Source:
http://wiki.lxde.org/en/Main_Page
On the other hand,
gives me
for the entry "lxde".

Well... Let's see:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/raring/lxde
and
http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/lxde
Both report Package: lxde (0.5.0-4), but I believe that's the package name/version for Debian and its derivatives.
On the other hand,
http://sourceforge.net/projects/lxde/?source=navbar
reports 0.3.2 of lxinput-0.3.2.tar.gz for download.
Just note taht lxpannel (just an example) is at LXPanel 0.5.12:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/lxde/fi ... 0panel%29/
Wow... too many versions here. I'm confused too.
Cheers,
IberĂȘ

Thank you for the reply, vasa1!
I'm out of blank media at the moment, but when I get some again I can try ps -ef > stat.txt before and after invocation of CD/DVD Creator. I don't have any way of invoking CD/DVD Creator without a blank optical media.
I don't have an "apt" command, but I did look at the web link. I didn't find a method on that site to extract the lxde version, but that site does show the lxde version from an earlier release as 0.3.2.1.
With that and your version of 0.5.0, I think my version is 0.5.5. I get that number from this:
Code: Select all
frank[5004] rpm -qa | grep -i lxde
lxde-common-0.5.5-38.1.2.noarch
lxde-common-branding-openSUSE-12.1-27.1.1.noarch
patterns-openSUSE-lxde-12.3-7.10.1.x86_64
patterns-openSUSE-lxde_office-12.3-7.10.1.x86_64
frank[5005]
With our different distros it's not easy to compare apples to apples, but I think thanks to your help I know my lxde version now! Heboland.

Oops! I just took apt for granted! Merits asking around for the rpm equivalent. If I come across something, I'll post back.
I don't know how old this is:
http://www.jpsdomain.org/linux/apt.html :
APT and RPM Packager Lookup Tables
...
This is intended as a lookup table to allow someone familiar with one package tool to figure out how to do things in another one. It's not a feature comparison per se, thought it looks like one. ...

I checked the lxde wiki page as well and came up with the 0.3.2.1 version (released 26 january 2009) as being the current one. Obviously some of the components have been upgraded. For instance,PCManFM is now version 1.1.0. I guess that it doesn't really make any difference what the version is since we are getting updates for the components.
heboland, do you see what you started?

Well done vasa1. I bookmarked that page. It sure does look like a comparison page. That last modified on the bottom of the page (11 June 2009) is an indication that it is pretty old. That of couse doesn't mean that it isn't still good.

Thanks for responses folks!
lbsUser, somehow I missed your input! Thanks for your contribution.
The main reason to me for knowing the lxde rev level is that with other desktops it's customary to include that information in a post. Problems with old SW are often fixed in newer versions.
Rex, sorry to touch off a mail storm!
vassa1, getting back to CD/DVD Creator, I got some blank media, so I had a chance to try your "ps" suggestion FWIW.
I ran ps -ef > before.txt, then inserted the blank. When the popup displayed I selected CD/DVD Creator. After it opened I ran ps -ef > after.txt. Then I took a diff of the two files. This is how that came out"
Code: Select all
frank[5001] diff cdcAfter.txt cdcBefore.txt

If there is a smoking gun here it would have to be gvfsd-burn. I saw that in the task manager previously, but it's not an executable. nautilus is in my path, but I don't think it has a burner plugin. netactview is my network monitor.
vasa1, your idea was a good one, but the results don't reveal anything to me. Heboland.

on topic: looks like you should raise COLUMNS= to at least 200.

Rex, sorry to touch off a mail storm!
i quite like the mail storm.
i would say at least on ubuntu and crunchbag forums it is customary to put the version of the
Distribution in a post, or even your profile, but not the version of the
Desktop Environment - which is what we're talking about here. confusing, yeah, but i love it - software freedom is a communal effort. many voices.

Guys, any conversation on this forum is welcome (except SPAM which fortunately has been under control as of late) We just have to remember that the OP (heboland) still is looking for a solution. Mail storms are occasionally welcome. They demonstrate that someone is reading.

Why do you say that gvfsd-burn is not an executable? (I don't know what it is, BTW.)
Also, you have Nautilus installed. Was it there by default?
