Thanks Rex! On a desktop machine, I just installed Zorin 8 Lite, which is based on Lubuntu 13.10. After I installed xcompmgr, I got the double network applets problem. Long story short, the solution on the link you posted worked perfectly!

The solution is:
Edit ~/.config/lxsession/Lubuntu/desktop.conf and remove the line 'network_gui/command=nm-applet'

Upon reboot I now have only a single network icon in the indicator applet
I know this is an old thread, but someone else might need this info since Zorin 8 Lite just came out yesterday.
