The problem of missing buttons is related to policykit settings -- part of my problem may be that I am running Debian testing and lxpolkit is not present in testing. I will add a bug report for the problem that lxsession-logout does not work with systemd installed, altho I'm sure the developers are aware of this.

If I remember well I had the same problem when installing Debian Wheezy and solving it with

apt-get install hal
