I have installed Vector linux 6 with LXDE and it works great. Laptop is P2 400mhz 128 ram but Vector linux runs it very well. My sister is only 4 years old now and starte to use it at least half year ago it is first her OS and she copes with it pretty well 
Of course all needed icons on desktop gcompris childsplay etc. With opera its even possible to browse web normally (disk cache off, because it gives big slowdowns).
