I would mention that it takes a few minutes for the index to compile the search results. The first time you open synaptic after installing apt-xapian-index you may not see the quick search box right away. I usually open synaptic and then minimize for a few minutes and then close it. Once the packages have been indexed the quick search box will be there automatically.

tried lubuntu on 9 year old desktop(im using it as a server) that im now using as a server with lxde debian. It didn't work on my desktop, but im getting my own macbook pro in a couple of month's, and will defiantly use it then.
