no menu icons in lxpanel

Hi,
I just installed ubuntu 9.10, and I am using its lxpanel (version 0.5.3), together with lxmenu-data (version 0.1.1) and libmenu-cache0 (0.2.5). I am also using openbox as my wm.
I am *not* using lxsession or any other component of lxde. They are not even installed. I am using gnome-setting-daemon instead.
The problem is that I don't see any menu icons. I see the menu entries, and when I press them they launch the application -- but for some reason there are no icons.
I tried deleting .cache/menu, and starting from a fresh lxpanel config file, and also reinstalling everything -- but it is all in vain.
Can it be that lxpanel is no longer an independent package, and that it needs lxsession, or some other component ?
I am asking this because when I installed the complete LXDE desktop, it was OK.
BTW, in my previous ubuntu, 8.10, the very same configuration just worked fine.
Thanks,
Itai.
